Out Of Print is an ongoing re-archiving action made in response to an historical note in the career of art duo CHRISTO & JEANNE-CLAUDE.
While trawling the library stacks at the art school nova Milne attended, they noted inconsistencies in the attribution of Jeanne-Claude’s name to books published on their work. Circa 1994, artworks previously published and attributed to the artist CHRISTO started to be credited with the inclusion of his wife’s name JEANNE-CLAUDE, officially becoming thereafter ‘CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE’. The artists personal website includes a section of ‘Most Common Errors’ which outlines errors that frequently appeared in print. Notably, the couple claim to have worked together since 1961. Many publications have been re-published since 1994, now retroactively including their collaborative authorship more fully.
Since noting the discord, nova has been collecting second hand and ex-library books (many now out of print) floating in discarded piles or old bookstores, published prior to 1994, and bearing only the name of CHRISTO. In a restorative gesture, and perhaps a poetic memorial to the since deceased Jeanne-Claude, nova Milne lovingly foil stamp the books indicating the date of their own alteration.
